Children and newborns have bodies that react differently than adults. It is vital that health practitioners grasp the best practices for treating pediatric patients in life-threatening situations.

Heart rhythms and airway management tools are two of the most significant variations in providing life support to pediatric patients. Medical caregivers must also be aware of the effects of various medications on newborns and children.

A man's swift thinking at a restaurant saved a baby's life. Despite his long career as a nurse at the Mayo Clinic, Brad Burt has never had to use his ACLS and PALS training outside of work.

"As a nurse, I've dealt with a variety of circumstances, but I've never dealt with an acute issue before, so I was a little concerned," he said. "Once I realized I needed to jump in, training took over, and I just did what I was taught to do." Burt was able to clear the child's throat and save her life by using back thrusts.

He also advocates that ordinary people should learn how to perform first-aid and CPR as well. He believes it is critical that everyone learn this skill. Restaurant employees, parents, because choking and other similar incidents might occur at home or in the automobile. It can occur almost anywhere. There won't always be a healthcare professional nearby, so it's critical to develop those abilities," he said.

PALS certification training is designed to educate health-care professionals for any and all pediatric emergency circumstances that may arise, increasing the chances of preserving a child's life.
